4 Key Steps to Setup Twitter for your Small Business

Using Twitter can be an effective social media presence for your small business. However, when you first start, there are some items you need to pay attention to. Specifically, there are four steps to setup Twitter that will greatly benefit your business.

Sign up with Email

When you first setup Twitter, you need to sign up with an email. This is pretty standard for a socialĀ  media platform. Once you do this, be sure to take advantage of the option to find friends. With the email that you used, Twitter can find contacts and invite them to follow you. This can give you a little bit of a leg up when getting your first few followers.

Profile

Your profile consists of a few sections that allow people to learn more about you. Be sure to completely fill out your profile in order to look complete and professional. The major portions of your profile that you need to have completed are:

  • Profile Picture
  • Header Picture
  • Bio
  • Link (if you have a website)

Following People

Anytime you follow someone, they should be a user who will add to your online community or experience. They might be someone who you can learn a lot from. These types of people will give you information that may also be helpful to retweet to your followers. In addition, you might follow people because you think they can learn from you. These should be people who will be genuinely interested in your content and likely willing to engage with you online.

Never follow people just for the sake of following others. Some users have a “followback” offer where they say they will follow you if you follow them. However, they may not get anything out of your posts and you may not get anything out of theirs. Don’t follow these types of users. You want your followers to be people who will actually enjoy hearing from you, not just numbers.

Posting

It is extremely important to be actively posting on Twitter. This should be a combination of your own content, others’ content, and self-promotional posts. You want to keep the number of each of these types proportional, but you should have them all. This way, you’ll have an active presence and can show that you are adding benefit to the online community.

It might seem hard to find the correct number of times to post on Twitter each day. Too few and you risk never being seen, but you also don’t want to spam your followers. It is generally accepted that posting 5-10 times a day is a decent amount. Some people may not see every post, but you can experiment with when your target audience is online.

Using Twitter effectively can be difficult at first. You need to take a few steps to ensure success, but eventually, you’ll learn what works for your business. Be sure to follow these four steps in order to setup Twitter effectively for your small business.
